About the Artist
Experience the colorful and textured style of Kansas City based artist, Monica Womack. Womack's use of thick, solid colors and gripping detail give her artwork a sense of dimensionality that truly pops off of the page. As an artist, Womack is known for her love of animals and nature, she has a reputation for capturing the spirit of her subjects in her unique way. Monica is the daughter of Rockabilly Hall-of-Fame Songwriter Keith O’Conner Murphy. With a family background in the music industry, it 's no surprise that Womack brings a sense of rhythm and movement to her work.
Monica first got her start in one of New Jersey’s leading high schools. Monica earned the only art scholarship given and was one of 40 New Jersey artists selected to have their artwork tour the state and displayed in various government buildings. While in high school, Monica was commissioned to travel to Indiana and create a mural on the wall of a popular diner. She created a 3-D mural which contained a real antique refrigerator door. She made the front page of the local newspaper. Her mural attracted a lot of attention, including an Indianapolis art teacher who brought her class, from over an hour away, to view the mural. Monica also has a background in portraiture, and was commissioned by the television host of the top-rated “Rosie O’Donnell Show”. After seeing her work, Rosie securely handed confidential photographs of her two children and asked Monica to paint their portraits.
After high school, she was interviewed and accepted to nearly every leading college specializing in art in the Eastern half of the US. She selected KCAI (Kansas City Art Institute) as her college of choice, which at that time was rated as one of the top three US art schools. One of the attractions of KCAI was the possibility of studying under Professor Jack Lew, who worked closely with Disney and was producing Lion King at the time. She was very fortunate to have the opportunity to study under him before Disney hired him away prior to her graduation. He is still a friend and has praised her fine art. Monica earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from KCAI, majoring in Illustration and Design. She liked Kansas City, Missouri so much that she decided to establish her roots in the area, and raised her 4 children.
When Monica is not painting, you can find her running The Sign & Design Shop (The Grooviest Print Shop), which she owns and operates with her husband, Paul, in Kansas City. They offer many services including signs, graphic design, screen printing, and only recently fine art. In the past year, her passion (fine art) has unexpectedly become the fastest growing part of the business. Just through word of mouth, visitors to her shop, and an internet presence, she has sold her artwork to people worldwide. She has sold her artwork as far away as Hong Kong and Norway. Many have commissioned her to do paintings of their pets, giving them the unique “Womack” touch. She has created novelty items, such as earrings, playing cards, greeting cards, key chains and much more. Her artwork is a must-have for any collector or lover of art.
